Early life:

On January 28, 1949, Gregg Popovich was born in East Chicago, Indiana, to a family of basketball players. He grew up in a basketball-loving environment. He began his professional career as a player with the Chicago Bulls. Gregg was pushed to play basketball from a young age by his Croatian mother and Serbian father. He was a member of the Biddy Basketball All-Star squad, which finished third in the World Tournament in 1960. Popovich enrolled in the United States Air Force Academy in the wake of his high school graduation. During his time at the academy, he was the team’s captain and the team’s highest scorer in basketball.

When Popovich attended the University of Denver for his undergraduate work, he pursued graduate work in physical education, which he subsequently completed. Popovich moved on to collegiate basketball in 1979, becoming the head coach of Pomona-Pitzer. Popovich honed his coaching skills at the school over the next nine years, finally leading them to their first-ever championship. During this time, Popovich took a year off to work with Larry Brown, the head coach of the University of Kansas football team.

The Spurs hired Popovich as an assistant coach in 1988, and he has been with the team ever since.
