It was a tough choice to leave his previous school, but it was the right one. He was also approached about doing cameos in other films, such as The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1986)
When Phil was a kid, he got his first acting parts in the theatre because of his mother’s contacts with talent agencies. Although he appeared in supporting roles in films such as “Calamity the Cow” and “A Hard Day’s Night,” he never felt comfortable onscreen. As a result, he gravitated toward music during his high school years.
When the rock band ‘Genesis’ advertised for a drummer in the mid-70s, Collins auditioned and was hired as the group’s new drummer in August 1970. Collins travelled with the band and performed drums and percussion on their albums over the next five years. ‘Nursery Cryme,’ their first album, was published in 1971.
A temporary substitute for the band’s lead vocalist in the mid-’70s when the band couldn’t find a suitable replacement was provided by Collins. Collins contributed vocals to ‘Genesis’s debut, ‘A Trick of the Tail,’ released in 1973. The record was a big success in the United States and the United Kingdom. The album’s chart-topping success caused ‘Genesis’ to reconsider recruiting a vocalist, given they already had Phil.
The band went on hiatus in 1978. Meanwhile, Phil’s personal life continued to spiral out of control. His marriage to his wife also suffered due to his inability to maintain control. ‘Grace and Danger’ and ‘Product’ were the two albums he provided drums to. Even though many bands were hiring him to produce their albums, Phil wasn’t ready to go solo yet.
